A correction to the above article: Bert didn't whittle a bat, he made a lathe out of a washing machine motor and made the bat.

Bert won a trip to the Toronto winter fair for public speaking. After High School Bert went to Chicago where he took a course in diesel Engineering. In the winter he overhauled the farm machinery, ready for spring. Bert met his namesake, my oldest son, in January 1944, when my son Wilbert who was 3 months old.
